Template-based synthesis is an important method. Some features of this method are discussed in this paper. The influences of density and sizes of pores on the field emission properties in template-synthesized carbon nanotube array are studied as well. The tip electric field of nanotubes, the electric field enhancement factor and the optimum density of pores are presented with analytic equations. The theoretical results show that the field enhancement factor is sensitive to pore densities of templates. At a specific, optimum density of pores, the field enhancement factor may be sharply improved. Otherwise, the length and the radius of pores have different effect on the electron emission from the arrays. A uniformly distributed model about templates and carbon nanotube arrays is introduced and applied into the analysis of some carbon nanotube arrays with satisfying results.

Key Words: carbon nanotubes • template pores • field emission • field enhancement
